Living in God's Love

Home | Daily Word

VOLUNTEER
I am God's love in expression.

By helping others through challenging times, we tap into our own inner strength. Offering a gentle and steady hand, an encouraging word or rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on behalf of others--these acts of caring fulfill us not only as human beings, but as sacred beings.

We reach out in love through the many ways we serve. It may be reading to a child or visiting an elderly patient in a nursing home; providing comfort and essential aid to residents in a disaster area, or caring for animals at a local shelter. We can give from the heart in a multitude of ways.

As good Samaritans who offer care and comfort to others, we answer the call to be God's love in expression.

God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."--Exodus 3:4

Tone Check

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. —Colossians 4:6

Driving home from work, I heard a radio advertisement that got my attention. It was for a computer program that checks e-mails as they are written. I was familiar with “spell check” and “grammar check” programs, but this was different. This was “tone check.” The software monitors the tone and wording of e-mails to make certain they are not overly aggressive, unkind, or mean-spirited.

As I listened to the announcer describe the features of this software, I wondered what it would be like to have something like that for my mouth. How many times have I reacted harshly instead of listening first—and later regretted the words I had spoken? Certainly a tone check would have protected me from responding so foolishly.

Paul saw the need for us as believers to check our speech—especially when talking to those who are not Christians. He said, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one” (Col. 4:6). His concern was that our speech be graceful, reflecting the beauty of our Savior. And it must be inviting to others. Talking with the right tone to unbelievers is vital to our ability to witness to them. Colossians 4:6can be our tone check.

Tone of voice can be effective
If our spirit’s calm and meek;
Let us watch our words and actions,
Always careful how we speak. —Hess

Every time we speak, our heart is on parade.

Not At This Time

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. —Romans 12:2
Bible in a year:
Isaiah 5-6; Ephesians 1

It can be quite discouraging for wanna-be writers to get their work rejected time after time. When they send in a manuscript to a publisher, they’ll often hear back in a letter with these words: “Thank you. But your submission does not meet our needs at this time.” Sometimes this really means “not at this time—or ever.” So they try the next publisher and the next.

I’ve found that the phrase This does not meet our needs at this time—or ever can be a helpful saying in my Christian walk to renew my mind and refocus my thoughts on the Lord.

Here’s what I mean. When starting to worry, we can remind ourselves: “Worry does not meet my needs at this time—or ever. My heart’s need is to trust God. I will ‘be anxious for nothing’ ” (Phil. 4:6).

When we envy what another person has or does, we can reinforce the truth: “Envy does not meet my needs at this time—or ever. My need is to give thanks to God. His Word says, ‘Envy is rottenness to the bones’ (Prov. 14:30), and ‘In everything give thanks’ ” (1 Thess. 5:18).

We can’t renew our minds by ourselves (Rom. 12:2); it’s the transforming work of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Yet speaking the truth in our thoughts can help us to submit to the Spirit’s work within.

For Further Thought
What are some areas you struggle with in your heart?
Ask God to renew your mind that it might think like His.
Then keep reminding yourself of the truth.

FaithWriters.com-Christian Christian Living - The Joy of Jesus is Contentment
How can one find contentment given the problems of the world today? The Joy of Jesus is being in the perfect state of Love. Yet, there so many people living in utter poverty. Can we find peace that can sustain us during these last days?

Paul was in chains, beaten, starved and ship wreaked in his zeal for the Lord. He was content in his soul. Why? Jesus is the at the center of all joy. When we think about the promises of God, we can find the greatest source of joy in the universe.

Jesus gave his life on the cross for the sins of the world. The power of God raise Jesus on the third day. We pray for such Joy. Contentment is not the removal of unfortunate circumstance, but dealing with problems focusing upon the greater glory of God in The Joy of Jesus.

Find The Book

I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord. —2 Kings 22:8

One Sunday at the church where I pastor, I invited three children to find several scrolls with Bible verses written on them that I had hidden in our worship center. I told them that once they found them and read the words aloud, I would give them a prize. You should have seen those kids! They ran, moved chairs, and looked under plants and in purses (with permission). Their search for the scrolls was intense, but exciting. Their diligent search and subsequent discovery of the scrolls led to joy in the children, affirmation from our congregation, and a renewed sense of the importance of God’s Word.

In 2 Kings 22–23, we read how King Josiah and the people of Judah rediscovered the joy and importance of God’s Word. During the repairing of the temple, Hilkiah the high priest found the Book of the Law. It must have been lost or hidden during the reign of Manasseh. Then when the scroll was read to King Josiah, he listened and responded to it (vv.10-11). He sought further understanding of it (vv.12-20), and he led the people to renew their commitment to its importance in their lives (23:1-4).

Many today have unprecedented access to God’s Word. Let’s renew our commitment to “find” it every day and by our lives show its prominence.

O Book divine, supreme, sublime

Entire, eternal, holy, true;

Sufficient for all men and time—

We pledge our faith to thee anew. —Anon.

Life as we understand it is a total experience. We are physical and mental beings. The question as to ones soul is far deeper than one could imagine. Jesus is concerned about our souls. Are you equally concerned?

There are many people today concerned about the soul of the planet Earth. The global warming that creates storms so violent that have destroyed cities in seconds. The economy has caused server joblessness and unrest. People are in great pain and peril. What are we to do as things events move rapidly towards the end?. God through Jesus Christ has revealed

All we can do is pray. God through Jesus Christ has revealed His word to us. It is by faith that Moses parted the Red Sea. It is by faith that Danial faced the loin. Our faith is all we have when the world as turned ugly. Jesus is all we need when it is all we have left."

OurPrayer Power of Prayer Newsletter

OurPrayer Power of Prayer NewsletterWhat Prayer Can Do: Timely Gift

by Mary Smith, Richmond, Virginia

I watched as my friend Carol herded her small children across the church parking lot one Sunday toward her car. How does she do it all? I wondered.

A single mother on a tight budget, Carol was just about to start nursing school. She dreamed of making a better life for herself and her kids.

Not long ago she had asked the ladies at our church for prayers as she embarked on this new journey. Several of us had secretly purchased as a surprise a couple of the textbooks she would need for her first semester of school. I only wished we could do more.

Back home that Sunday, I e-mailed my sister-in-law, Andie, and asked her to pray for Carol too. Andie was a registered nurse. If anyone knew what it was like to juggle a nursing career and a family, it was Andie.

She e-mailed me back right away. “You bet I’ll pray for her!”

Two days later I received a package from Andie. I opened it up. Inside was a lovely ladies’ watch with a note from her: “This watch was given to me when I made Nurse of the Year. Please give it to Carol and let her know that I’ll definitely be praying her through nursing school!”

That Sunday we presented Carol with her textbooks.

“Thank you! You have no idea how much this means to me,” Carol exclaimed, hugging the books to her chest.

“We want you to be all ready for school,” one of the women told her.

“Now I can get that wristwatch I’ve wanted,” Carol said. “One with a second hand, like every nurse needs to count respirations and pulses.”

Andie’s watch! In all of the excitement of giving Carol her textbooks, I had completely forgotten to take the watch out of my purse. I pulled it out along with the note and handed them both to Carol.

Carol was speechless as she slipped the watch onto her wrist. “It’s perfect,” she said softly.

I watched the second hand tick by as Carol read Andie’s note. Looks like I had finally learned the secret of how Carol juggled all of the challenges in her life. With the right prayer, anything was possible

FaithWriters.com-Christian Christian Living - Waiting on The Lord is Worthwhile

FaithWriters.com-Christian Christian Living - Waiting on The Lord is WorthwhileWe spend a great deal of time waiting on a variety of things in life. Farmers wait on their crops. People wait in line at the store, airports, and and for a fine meal that requires time. The Bible tells us to wait on the Lord.

Jesus had compassion with all people. He would make the time to teach and provide comfort the people.

People are in such a hurry today. Everything is moving so fast. Time is one in the same with God. Jesus came to give life more abundantly. Jesus said that he will prepare a place for us.

Streets of gold, pearly gates, and pure joy in praising God. We thank God for all spiritual blessings as we wait on the Lord. As we wait on the Lord let us be of good cheer. It is more than worthwhile; it is everlasting.

INNER PEACE
I am calm and serene.

Nothing can disturb me without my permission. For that reason, I begin my day with a choice for peace. Regardless of external events, the length or urgency of my to-do list, or the activity of my busy mind, I find peace within.

As I become quiet, aware of Spirit, and aware of my own thoughts and emotions, I am not sidetracked by any rash reaction to turmoil. I focus my attention on my breathing, close my eyes and envision the tranquility of Spirit. I am calm as I make a few simple choices for peace: I smile; I turn the television off; I shut down the computer.

A few moments in prayer or meditation attune me to the serenity within. In Spirit, I am calm, serene and undisturbed.

Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace.--Isaiah 26:3

FaithWriters.com-Christian Encouragement - A New Sense of Hope

FaithWriters.com-Christian Encouragement - A New Sense of Hope
What do you do when you are having a bad day. Given these economic conditions and weather, there only seems to be bad news. Have you ever wondered why? Is there something that we can do to overcome these unfortunate circumstances? Yes. Jesus is still the light of the world.

In order to better understand our situations one must look at a story regarding several men in a boat during a huge storm. The storm was so strong that the boat was on the verge of being completely destroyed.

The people were wise enough to call on Jesus. Jesus raised His hand and calmed the storm. We must place our hope in Christ Jesus to quiet the storms in our lives. Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we by faith in him. God raised Jesus from the dead so that we too will live with Him. A new hope for an old problem: Faithlessness. Jesus is our hope.

A Reason to Pray Today
The South has been hit with violent storms. People are in need of help. War is still on the planet, and gasoline prices continue to rise. We need prayer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Apr 29, 2011 – A reason to pray is very much at hand, the problems of the world are closing in on people and communities. The weather, jobs, and gas prices have changed the way we believe that life is good for some and not for others; people need help. The Joy of Jesus Church is concerned about the pain of other people in need.

We pray for all people at all times. Our focus is on the storm victims of the Southern States hit by incredible storms. Homes and businesses have been lost. People have died. We need to pray that they can make it through these challenging moments.

The Joy of Jesus offers prayer to all families. We really hoe that you will pray with us for others. Gas prices are going so high that people can not afford to even look for jobs or food. The greed of others has gotten to a new high. People need jobs and hope. We still believe that in time all things will be made right. Please share our concern with your contacts. The Rev. Dr. James A. Lee is praying for you. Visit The Joy of Jesus on Facebook.

Psalms 146. The Holy Bible: King James Version.

Psalms 146. The Holy Bible: King James Version.

The Psalms
146

Praise for the LORD's Righteous Acts
1 Praise ye the LORD.

Praise the LORD, O my soul.
2 While I live will I praise the LORD:

I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.
3 Put not your trust in princes,

nor in the son of man,
in whom there is no help.
4 His breath goeth forth,

he returneth to his earth;
in that very day his thoughts perish.
5 Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help,

whose hope is in the LORD his God:
6 which made heaven, and earth,

the sea, and all that therein is:
which keepeth truth for ever:
7 which executeth judgment for the oppressed:

which giveth food to the hungry.
The LORD looseth the prisoners:
8 the LORD openeth the eyes of the blind:

the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down:
the LORD loveth the righteous:
9 the LORD preserveth the strangers;

he relieveth the fatherless and widow:
but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.
10 The LORD shall reign for ever,

even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations.
Praise ye the LORD.
